For almost twenty years, T-Squared has transformed from a small venture in Gugulethu into a prominent South African streetwear brand that emphasizes local culture, craftsmanship, and community engagement. What started with selling printed T-shirts to peers has grown into a comprehensive operation, complete with its own manufacturing capabilities, an online shopping platform, and an expanding footprint beyond its local area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Central to T-Squared\u2019s journey is a dedication to local production and fostering opportunities through skill development initiatives. The brand trains young individuals in garment creation and honors South African culture through its collections, establishing its identity as more than just a clothing line.<\/span>
\nIn this interview, we discuss the evolution of T-Squared, the impact of its hometown, the growth of South African streetwear, the significance of local manufacturing, and the challenges of establishing a sustainable independent fashion label in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

T-Squared has evolved from its early days into a well-known South African streetwear brand. Reflecting on your journey, what do you consider has been the most significant turning point for the brand?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

One of the key turning points was when we took complete control of our production process, including owning our machinery and optimizing our e-commerce site to bolster sales and business growth. This approach has significantly enhanced both our revenue and our delivery speed. With online marketing becoming increasingly vital in retail, it has also played a crucial role in spreading awareness about our brand.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I launched T-Squared, I began by selling themed printed T-shirts to school friends and continued this at university. E-commerce has allowed us to reach a broader market beyond the local foot traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n

How has your hometown influenced the brand\u2019s identity, aesthetic, and values?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Gugulethu is the birthplace of our brand and is known for producing fashionable individuals and trendsetters. This connection has fostered relatability between our community and T-Squared. When I established the brand, there was a lack of authentic streetwear from Gugulethu that represented local culture and community. Now, T-Squared holds a special place in the hearts of those in Gugulethu, Cape Town, and is gradually expanding nationwide. Building this business in Gugulethu has been an incredible experience, marked by ongoing support since we started.<\/span><\/p>\n

The brand emphasizes local design and manufacturing. Why is it crucial for T-Squared to produce locally, given that overseas manufacturing can often be less expensive?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Local production ensures that our brand maintains its originality and authenticity, differentiating us from those who have their products manufactured abroad. Additionally, when customers visit our factory, they experience the creation process of their products firsthand. We also focus on hiring and training local talent to teach essential skills like sewing, garment construction, cutting, stitching, finishing, and pressing. In doing so, we not only create jobs but also empower our community through skill development and knowledge transfer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
