Two iconic songs created in one night

One of the most remarkable moments in Parton’s songwriting occurred in 1973 when she crafted both Jolene and I Will Always Love You during a single evening. While Jolene asserted itself as an unforgettable song, it was I Will Always Love You that became a monumental success in the world of country music. When Whitney Houston recorded her legendary version for the film The Bodyguard in 1992, the royalties returned to Parton, showcasing her foresight in securing her work.

This instinct for preservation emerged years earlier when Elvis Presley showed interest in performing the same song. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, insisted on taking 50% of the publishing rights as part of the offer. Parton firmly rejected this condition, a bold choice at the time that later proved to be one of the wisest decisions of her career.

![]("https://cdn.briefly.co.za/images/360/551ef887ee3a0715.jpeg?v=1")

Returning to her Tennessee roots

In 1980, Parton appeared in her first film, 9 to 5, sharing the screen with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Not only did she act in the movie, but she also composed its title song, creatively tapping out the distinct opening beat with her acrylic nails. The film’s relatable working-class theme allowed the track to resonate beyond the cinema, solidifying its status as a timeless anthem.

In 1986, Parton pivoted back to her roots, revamping an existing amusement park in East Tennessee into Dollywood, a massive theme park and resort that became a substantial tourist destination and an economic boon to the area she cherished.

![]("https://cdn.briefly.co.za/images/360/5d30f89a6e8c1289.jpeg?v=1")

A generous gift of $1 million

During the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Parton showcased her generosity by donating $1 million (R15.9 million) to Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, a contribution that played a pivotal role in the research leading to the Moderna vaccine. This act emphasized her far-reaching influence that extended well beyond her artistic pursuits in entertainment.

Dolly Parton leaves behind an impressive collection of works and a legacy of kindness that few others can rival. Although her passing signifies the close of a significant chapter, the songs, the stories, and the influence she had will continue to resonate.
