Produced by Johannesburg’s Stay Low Records, the 13-track album follows Marcus Harvey’s well-received 2024 release Now You Know Me. The album is both written and performed by Lawrence Harvey Mashiloane, with Vaughn Thiel serving as executive producer and Jordan Klem handling the mixing and mastering.

The journey begins with the personal “Rebecca’s Prayer [Intro]”, crafted by Sundaeb Beats, which establishes an emotional connection right from the start. Following this, Harvey navigates a rich blend of soul, R&B, and contemporary South African sounds.

The album features a distinguished lineup of collaborators. American rapper Mick Jenkins contributes to the evocative “Come to Me”, while Blk Odyssey is featured on “Turtle Doves”. Additionally, Kush brings an extra layer to the multilingual aspect of the album with the Xitsonga-influenced “Ndži Lava Ku China”.

The complete Son of Elvis tracklist includes:

With key contributions from Fiji Mageba, Sundaeb beats, Tyson Sybatelli, Tyler, and Jordan Klem, the album’s production solidifies a soundscape that links Harvey’s connections to Alexandra Township with a contemporary aesthetic.

The album’s title and the track “Who Is Elvis?” have created considerable interest. Harvey frequently incorporates reflections on his experiences and identity in his music, and Son of Elvis appears to expand on that theme, placing a stronger focus on heritage, self-exploration, and artistic continuity.

This personal exploration is particularly evident in the opening track, “Rebecca’s Prayer [Intro]”, which pays homage to Harvey’s mother, Rebecca. Throughout the album, his use of English interwoven with Sepedi and other South African languages enhances the cultural identity that resonates throughout the project.

Since its announcement earlier this year, anticipation for Son of Elvis has been steadily increasing. While the release date remains flexible, moving between July and late August, interest has remained high, fueled by intimate listening sessions and a special live concert at Untitled Basement, both of which were sold out.

The newly disclosed tracklist indicates that Harvey views Son of Elvis as a cohesive work rather than just a set of individual tracks. With its personal narratives, thoughtfully curated collaborations, and diverse production input, the album promises to be an important milestone in Harvey’s journey as a musician and storyteller.
