“I’m a father, I’m a pastor, I’m a leader, I’m a brother. I’m at a different station of life,” Mabalane explained. “What does the soundtrack of my life sound like now? And that’s when the creativity started to flow,” he reflected during a discussion with SABC News.

Mabalane shared that he has spent many years crafting music, only to take a hiatus when it no longer resonated with his identity. He expressed how he often attempted to recreate past successes instead of letting his present experiences guide his creativity.

This acknowledgment was a pivotal moment for him and signaled a new phase in his musical journey. Kabelo Mabalane now aspires for his music to mirror his current experiences, encompassing his roles as a father, pastor, leader, and an established figure in the music world.

He also humorously recounted being referred to as “Uncle Kabelo” by a younger colleague, marking a significant moment in his career.

“I was like, you know, any self-respecting man would just accept the title,” he joked, welcoming the term and the wisdom acquired through his years in the industry.

This new viewpoint is reflected in his recent single, “Everybody Needs Somebody,” which showcases Mabalane embracing vulnerability unlike the bold confidence characterizing some of his earlier work.

For Mabalane, vulnerability signifies strength. He argues that it requires bravery and underscores a more profound truth about human experiences.

“I really believe that vulnerability is underpinned by courage,” he stated, challenging the notion of complete independence. Mabalane advocates for interdependence and acknowledges the impact others have on shaping individual journeys.

His insights are encapsulated in the fundamental message of the song: no one navigates life entirely on their own.

Mabalane pointed out the significance of the individuals in his life and their roles in his journey, noting, “We can’t sit there and say, I’ve made it all on my own.”

With “Everybody Needs Somebody,” Mabalane seems to be embarking on a musical path defined by his current self rather than by past iterations. After 11 years in the industry, his new music reflects not an echo of who he was, but rather a vivid portrayal of his present life.
