A video showcasing Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s clash with his lawyer made the rounds online, sparking considerable discussion among South Africans. Radio host Sol Phenduka shared his thoughts, bringing attention to the attorney at the center of the controversy.

The incident occurred on 8 September 2026 at Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, where Matlala’s attempted murder trial took a chaotic turn. Reports indicated that police officers prevented Matlala and his co-accused from meeting their legal representatives following an early adjournment, leading to a heated confrontation in the courtroom. Video clips of the altercation gained traction on X, highlighting Matlala’s aggressive approach towards attorney Annelene Van den Heever.

Sol Phenduka discusses Van den Heever’s background

Instead of concentrating on Matlala, Sol Phenduka directed his attention to the attorney. He remarked that Van den Heever has represented some particularly formidable individuals. He mentioned her connection to fugitive Radovan Krejčíř and Vusi “Khekhe,” labeling them as “way more dangerous characters.” Phenduka added that Van den Heever had spoken at Mswazi’s funeral as a close associate.

“I doubt Mr Matlala would touch her. She seems connected to way more dangerous people,” he wrote on X.

This comment was a response to @officialtwinny, who had raised concerns about Van den Heever’s safety, asking: “Is Annelene Van den Heever safe? Cat Matlala is one dangerous man.”

Public reaction to the courtroom incident

The viral video prompted a variety of responses from South Africans online. Many echoed Sol Phenduka’s views.

@NdzalamaHeir made a pop-culture reference: “Have you guys watched Ozarks? Remember that lawyer.”

Sol Phenduka himself responded: “Exactly.”

@PalmRace agreed: “She was unfazed by his behaviour. She knows real thugs, I agree.”

@SengetileS offered a nuanced perspective: “At first, their interaction was shocking, but then I thought maybe they understand each other; they might have shared more intense moments in private. They even seem able to jest. Anyway, perhaps Cat should rethink his confidence in her to secure his release based on the two mentioned.”

@Lerumo666 commented humorously: “People are overthinking this. This is a video of two pitbulls doing their thing.”

@rrzu_chumz reminded viewers of Matlala’s feared reputation: “CAT is the reason why Mswazi was feared, my guy, he’s not a small boy.”

@LouisBlanco_ questioned Van den Heever’s past cases: “So Bushiri is the only case she won? (A bail).”
