Manchester City is keeping an eye on Atlético Madrid midfielder Álex Baena as the club evaluates options for potential squad enhancement.

As reported by Football Insider, the Premier League club views the 25-year-old as a valuable prospect for the future, particularly for his proficiency on the left side of the pitch.

However, a transfer for Baena is not anticipated during the January transfer window unless Manchester City determine they require further reinforcements.

Baena has made a name for himself internationally, playing a significant role for Spain in the World Cup, where he started seven matches.

His performances have led to interest from other Premier League teams, with Newcastle United and Aston Villa also reportedly monitoring the midfielder.

This interest in Baena aligns with Manchester City’s ongoing evaluation of their squad depth and quality after a notable recruitment phase.

Softfootball previously noted that Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca emphasized the need for squad depth as the team aims for the Premier League title.

Maresca has reiterated that having high-quality players in various positions is crucial as City navigates a challenging season, particularly with engagements in multiple competitions.

After a tight win against Coventry City, the manager highlighted the wealth of talent available in his midfield, while acknowledging that their main competitors are similarly equipped.

These comments reflect why Manchester City may still be considering players like Baena, despite already having ample depth in midfield.

The club has made considerable investments in enhancing their squad and appears committed to sustaining a competitive lineup capable of handling injuries, suspensions, and packed fixture schedules.

Baena’s adaptability could present an appealing option for City should they decide to escalate their interest, offering Maresca additional tactical flexibility and reinforcing intra-squad competition.

For the time being, however, the approach seems to involve careful observation rather than any immediate transfer activity.

City will likely continue to monitor Baena’s progress and availability, with Newcastle and Aston Villa potentially remaining interested as well.

With the January transfer window still some weeks away, Manchester City has the opportunity to assess whether their current squad is adequate or if they require another player to support their bid for significant trophies.
