The focus on women in African Hip-hop aims to highlight exceptional talent throughout the continent, including the remarkable female artists making waves in South Africa. In this segment, we explore the journey of an artist I discovered while listening to Berry Jive’s music.

Grace Joao, who performs under the name Shee Blaaq, is a 21-year-old artist, songwriter, and brand ambassador originating from Mafikeng and raised in Letlhabile, North West. She has been steadily making her mark in the Pitori rap sphere, recently collaborating on two notable tracks in Berry Jive’s latest mixtape. Her performances have gained acclaim from audiences for her crisp delivery and vibrant stage presence. Let’s dive deeper into her story.

You grew up in Letlhabile, North West, yet you’re prominently involved in the Pitori rap community. How have your experiences in these two areas influenced your music and artistic identity?

I was born in Mafikeng, but I have lived in Letlhabile for as long as I can remember. Although I’ve never resided in Pretoria, the cultures in Letlhabile and Pretoria are quite alike. From the dialect to fashion and general cultural elements, there is a strong connection. This similarity in lifestyle allows my music to resonate with the Pitori sound, leading to my association with the scene.

Your skill in interweaving English, Portuguese, and “Spraka” (Pitori slang) in your lyrics is noteworthy. How did you cultivate this multilingual approach, and why is it significant to you?

I realized many artists were operating in similar lanes, prompting me to find a way to differentiate myself. I began incorporating Portuguese—my native tongue—along with Spraka, the vernacular we use colloquially, and a sprinkle of English. This mixture reflects my identity and contributes a distinct essence to my music.
