Inter Miami’s Rodrigo De Paul has expressed his belief that Lionel Messi is a strong candidate for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, emphasizing that there is little reason to contest this view after Messi’s exceptional performance during the World Cup at the age of 39.

De Paul shared these insights following Inter Miami’s victory over Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup, where Messi reached a milestone by scoring his 100th goal for the team in a 2-0 win. The midfielder pointed out Messi’s outstanding contributions during the 2026 World Cup, where Argentina advanced to the final and Messi was awarded the tournament’s best player title.

Softfootball noted that De Paul’s remarks hold significant importance, considering his close ties with Messi both on the field and in international competitions. De Paul has also played a vital role in Inter Miami’s recent achievements, including crucial performances throughout the Leagues Cup.

De Paul provided his first assist of the Leagues Cup during a thrilling match against Atlético de San Luis, aiding Messi’s performance as they mounted a comeback. Inter Miami triumphed 4-2 after falling behind, with De Paul playing a central role in midfield alongside Messi.

Since joining Inter Miami from Atlético Madrid, De Paul has proven crucial to the team. Earlier in the MLS season, he scored a goal and assisted twice in a 4-2 victory against Toronto FC, while Messi also contributed with a goal and two assists in that match.

De Paul’s latest remarks further bolster the support for Messi’s Ballon d’Or candidacy, reflecting on a World Cup performance he deemed remarkable, especially considering Messi’s age. Although other notable players are in the running for the award, De Paul has clearly stated his preferences.

For Messi, winning the individual accolade would be another significant milestone in his illustrious career, and his ongoing influence at Inter Miami keeps him prominently featured in discussions about the 2026 award.
