Bishop Maumela Apologises, Withdraws Remarks After Sibiya Court Appearance<\/p>\n

Bishop Azwihangwi Maumela has issued an apology and has fully retracted his statements made to the media in the wake of Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya\u2019s initial court appearance.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Maumela expressed that after reflecting on his comments and considering advice from those who spoke with him, he recognized the need for a more careful approach, especially given that the case involves a minor.<\/p>\n

He has renounced his previous statements and allegations, including comments about President Cyril Ramaphosa, law enforcement bodies, and the Madlanga Commission.<\/p>\n

Maumela emphasized that he did not mean to threaten, harm, or intimidate anyone, taking full responsibility for his remarks to the media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sincerely apologise for my conduct,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

He also committed to avoiding further public statements regarding the issue and affirmed his intent to let the legal proceedings unfold suitably.<\/p>\n

The apology came after Maumela\u2019s comments outside the Randburg Magistrate\u2019s Court on Tuesday, where he referred to Sibiya as a long-time acquaintance and a \u201cchild of God\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maumela had suggested that Sibiya\u2019s arrest was part of an internal dispute over the next National Police Commissioner position. He mentioned that police had visited the home of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu with a search warrant around the same time as Sibiya’s operation.<\/p>\n

He questioned the police leadership’s focus on the succession struggle while violence continued in Ekurhuleni, asserting that police resources should prioritize combating crime.<\/p>\n

Maumela also alluded to comments made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July 2025, indicating that it was suggested Sibiya should not assume the role of National Police Commissioner.<\/p>\n

He further raised doubts about whether Sibiya, who was already suspended and under scrutiny, would engage in the alleged offenses he currently faces.<\/p>\n

Maumela had also cautioned that if President Cyril Ramaphosa did not take action, \u201cwe are going to retaliate\u201d, and accused law enforcement of targeting individuals.<\/p>\n

He has now retracted those comments and accusations.<\/p>\n

Sibiya is facing serious charges, including rpe, trafficking in persons and s<\/em>xual grooming, and is currently in custody. His formal bail application is set for 29 September, with the State indicating its opposition to bail due to concerns over potential witness tampering and flight risk.<\/p>\n

Sibiya has not yet submitted a plea regarding the criminal charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
