DJs have taken a leading role in hip hop over recent years, marking the resurgence of an essential element within the genre. Engage or be left out.

In the last two years, it can be posited that DJs have emerged as the leading force in shaping hip hop culture across Africa. Whether it’s through producing albums as seen with Ready D, more technically-focused contributions by individuals like P-Kuttah and Kenzhero, vocal performances by artists such as Capital, or engaging live events from Milkshake and the duo Naves and Sphectacula, it is clear that the role of DJs in hip hop has transformed significantly. Many others on the continent also contribute to this thriving scene. However, two noteworthy figures stand out: Tumi Mooi, known as DJ Dimplez, and Lesego Nkaiseng, or DJ Speedsta. Dimplez, one of the most recognized DJs in Africa, has been essential to the evolution of commercial DJ practices. While he didn’t invent the craft, his achievements highlight the importance of excellence in any field. Almost every accolade available in the industry is reflected in Dimplez’s career; he is the founder of Pop Bottles Entertainment, a Ciroc ambassador, a recipient of multiple awards, a performer, a producer, and a respected DJ.

Conversely, Speedsta embodies the qualities of the born-free generation: ambition, boldness, and a mindset free from entitlement. At just 22 years old, he is viewed as an emerging force both as a DJ and a budding entrepreneur. With a presence on television, a strong fashion sense, award-nominated songs and videos, and a reputation as a radio personality, Speedsta represents a different chapter in the music industry. Both him and Dimplez have crucial roles in revitalizing the hip hop scene while challenging existing norms.

Both of you have been involved in hip hop for a significant period despite different experiences and representing distinct facets of the genre. Is there still a division between old school and new school, underground and mainstream, or is that distinction fading away in today’s hip hop landscape?

Dimplez: I believe it’s essential to showcase every perspective. I still want to hear Tumi release an album, and I still want Amu to produce. It’s crucial that Amu focuses on his passion, yet I desire the veterans to return to their roots. If I’m searching for a specific sound, I should know I can go to any of them. If I’m looking for something upbeat, I should turn to Cassper. For a lyrical vibe, Zubz comes to mind. We need a range of styles, and I believe there is a spot for everyone. This is why I appreciated the SA Hip Hop Awards; it embraced all voices. There needs to be a legacy of old school while recognizing the new wave and everything in between. We cannot disregard the classic sound.
