The community of Ilovu township, situated to the south of Durban, is reeling after a shocking find: the decomposing remains of an elderly woman were discovered in her kitchen on Tuesday morning, nearly two months after she was reported missing.

Local authorities, including police and forensic teams, are currently investigating the scene, while concerned neighbors gather outside the residence.

The body was uncovered after locals detected a foul smell coming from the house.

Realizing that they hadn’t seen the elderly woman for a significant amount of time, residents contacted the local Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Nokuphiwa Mkhize, the Chairperson of the Ilovu CPF, recounted the disturbing scene faced by community members and patrollers upon entering the property.

Mkhize reported that the woman’s grandson was discovered inside the home, eating a meal just feet from where the body lay.

“When we arrived at our neighbor’s yard, the grandson was unwilling to open the door for us,” Mkhize stated. “We insisted on entering forcibly if he did not let us in. Eventually, he opened the door, and that was when we were hit by the full force of the odor. We found the woman’s body lying in the kitchen.”

Upon questioning, the grandson refuted any suggestion of wrongdoing regarding her death.

“He insisted that he hadn’t harmed anyone, claiming that he found his grandmother dead on the floor,” Mkhize added.

“He mentioned that she had expressed her wishes about her remains, stating that she did not want to be buried but rather cremated when she passed away.”

CPF officials suspect that the grandson’s behavior, which appeared erratic, along with his proximity to the remains, indicates a possible influence from substance abuse.

Adding to community frustrations are claims that the grandson financially exploited his grandmother.

Mkhize disclosed that, despite the woman having been deceased for several weeks, the grandson reportedly collected her government pension funds as recently as the previous week.

He did not inform anyone, including the elderly woman’s sister, about her demise.

Local police have sealed off the residence and initiated an investigation into both the death and the reasons behind keeping it hidden.

This story is still developing.
