After four seasons, Hulu’s ‘Reasonable Doubt’ remains captivating, bolstered by stellar performances, emotionally impactful story arcs, and a soundtrack that is pure hip hop bliss.

Stellar performances and emotionally impactful story arcs focusing on a broader mystery ensure that Hulu’s Reasonable Doubt stays engaging, even in its fourth season.

Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi) has faced her share of chaos, but the fourth season of Reasonable Doubt, available for streaming on Disney+ in South Africa, presents her with the greatest risk of her career as she finally takes a chance on herself.

Jax embarks on her journey

The new season opens with Jax venturing out independently to establish her own law practice. She brings along her assistant and private investigator, making herself accountable for their livelihoods along with her own.

Unfortunately, her timing is far from ideal as she continues to heal from the gunshot wound that concluded season 3, having spent the start of this season in a coma.

Jax Stewart is an exceptional Los Angeles defense attorney at the peak of her career. With a questionable moral compass and unique interpretations of the law, Jax’s existence revolves around complex ethical dilemmas and personal drama. This clever narrative strategy elevates the stakes. Jax is no longer the renowned lawyer shielded by a well-known firm’s reputation. Each client, each case, and each misjudgment now impacts her directly, threatening to undermine her business and hard-earned reputation.

Tank captivates the audience

In its fourth season, Meagan Good, Tank (real name Durrell Artaze Babbs), Taylor Polidore Williams, and Rutina Wesley join the cast.

Among the newcomers, Tank stands out as the one receiving the most acclaim online for his convincing portrayal of Eric Cropper, a bold, charismatic, and shrewd music mogul accustomed to having his desires fulfilled.

Some have suggested that he could be embodying an exaggerated version of himself or drawing from the insights he has acquired over his lengthy and successful journey in the American music scene.

Good plays the role of the new district attorney Regina Harris, characterized as astute, empathetic, and no one’s fool. This makes her a formidable opponent for Jax.

Exploring trauma in various forms

Beyond the dramatic courtroom scenes and overarching mystery, the series truly excels in showcasing the myriad manifestations of trauma in our lives.

It emerges in Jax’s parenting style, her work life, her romantic relationships, and how her husband and teenage son cope with the consequences of last season’s tragedies and brush with death. The writers thoughtfully allow these moments to unfold. This emotional authenticity is what transforms a polished legal drama into something profoundly impactful.

A soundtrack for the culture

As a dedicated hip hop enthusiast, the score is one of the elements I appreciate most about the series.

Although it shares its name with a Jay-Z album, it encompasses much more. Its music selections feature a range of popular rap and R&B tracks from the last thirty years, and the show’s composers, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, create a distinct sonic signature that is unmistakably their own.

The series takes its title from Jay-Z’s debut album, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, with references continuing throughout.

The fourth episode, the latest as of this writing, is titled “Imaginary Players”, a song that Cardi B revived in 2025 with Jay-Z’s endorsement for her Am I the Drama? album. This illustrates the layered, cross-generational references woven throughout the series that reward avid hip hop fans.

Reasonable Doubt doesn’t aim to redefine the legal drama; it simply thrives within its genre. It’s polished, engaging, and anchored by performances that make even the most complicated decisions feel relatable.

This opinion comes from a viewer who still feels personally betrayed by a season 3 betrayal that was crucial to the plot and occasionally resurfaces in the current season.

Reasonable Doubt season 4 is available to stream on Disney+, with new episodes released weekly.
