Two emerging South African performers will portray Princess Aurora and Prince Perrault when *Sleeping Beauty The Musical* makes its much-anticipated African premiere at Johannesburg’s Peoples Theatre on November 3rd. The show will continue until Christmas Eve, featuring a lineup that includes numerous recognizable faces from the local television and theatre scene.

Gabrielle De Gama, noted for her role in the Emmy-nominated Mnet drama *Reyka*, will take on the character of Aurora, while Tumelo Mogashoa will embody the prince. Jill Girard, the director, remarked on how both actors distinguished themselves during the audition process.

“Occasionally, and it’s a rare occurrence, someone walks into an audition space, and magic unfolds; they are simply ideal for the part,” she expressed. “In this instance, two incredibly talented young individuals arrived within a quarter of an hour of each other, and I recognized we had discovered our Princess Aurora and her charming Prince.”

Debut in South Africa

De Gama, who also produces music under the name Jaydn Elle, has previous experience from her roles in *Annie Jnr* and *Seussical the Musical* at the Peoples Theatre. Mogashoa began his acting career in the United States before completing his education at Johannesburg’s National School of the Arts and graduating from the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy in Cape Town.

He will be making his debut at Peoples Theatre as Queen Catherine, teaming up with Donae Brazer, Gamelihle Bovana as King Henry, Luciano Zuppa as Hellisent, and Priyanka Bandu as Fairy Tulip.

The musical, penned by Ian Curran with melodies by Simon Hanson and Peter Vint, narrates Aurora’s tale, detailing her curse during childhood and her upbringing in secrecy. Her encounter with Prince Perrault ignites a captivating journey through the fictional Kingdom of Australis. Curran expressed the significance of bringing this theatrical piece to South Africa.

“Witnessing families unite and savor the warmth and enchantment of this performance is always incredibly special,” he said.

Performances are available on weekends and during school holidays, while weekday shows are reserved for educational institutions. Ticket prices begin at R180, with discounts offered to members of the Peoples Theatre Kids Club, and can be purchased through Webtickets.
