Olivia Dean set to headline Milk + Cookies 2027. Here’s what to expect regarding venues, the current local line-up, and why fans in South Africa are thrilled.

A hopeful quote post in late September caused quite a stir. Milk + Cookies revealed its comeback with a “Who will be there?” teaser, prompting @imbali_s to propose Olivia Dean as a potential headliner. Many responses agreed, while some expressed admiration but didn’t envisage her presence at the festival.

Now, the festival’s official channels have confirmed that the prediction was accurate.

The British artist will take the stage as the lead act for the third edition of Milk + Cookies in South Africa, scheduled at Sandringham Farm, Cape Town on 29 January and at the Expo Centre, Nasrec in Johannesburg on 31 January 2027.

Venues and the local line-up

This year, Sandringham Farm will serve as the new venue for the Cape Town event. Previously, the 2026 edition was hosted at Kenilworth Racecourse, and the inaugural 2025 festival took place at Ostrich Farm. Johannesburg’s location remains Nasrec, which was also the site for the previous year’s edition.

True to promise, the festival has begun revealing its South African performers first, and the line-up is starting to take shape. Artists such as Jade T, Zee Nxumalo, Chelsea Sloan, and Elaine have been confirmed, presenting a predominantly female ensemble leading up to Dean’s featured performance.

Who is Olivia Dean?

If her name became known to you through her chart-topping track Man I Need, here’s a brief overview.

At 27, this London-born singer-songwriter, with Jamaican-Guyanese heritage, honed her craft through church gospel music and busking in London. She is an alumna of the prestigious BRIT School. Her soulful and warm pop style earned her a nomination for the Mercury Prize for her debut album, Messy, released in 2023.

Her sophomore album, The Art of Loving, came out in September 2025 and marked a turning point. Man I Need dominated charts, claiming the top spot in the UK and Australia, and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. In an unprecedented move, she became the first female solo artist to land four songs in the UK Top 10 simultaneously.

Following her rise, accolades poured in. In February 2026, she secured a Grammy for Best New Artist, outperforming Katseye, The Marías, Addison Rae, sombr, Leon Thomas, Alex Warren, and Lola Young. Shortly thereafter, she captured four BRIT Awards: Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Pop Act, and Song of the Year, the latter for Rein Me In featuring Sam Fender.

Catching her at the top

This timing is a significant reason why South African fans are so enthusiastic. There’s a widespread belief that international stars typically perform here only after exhausting their bookings abroad. Conversely, Dean is arriving with a different narrative; the same season she performs in Cape Town and Johannesburg also includes her appearances at Lollapalooza India and LaLaLa Fest in Manila.

This also addresses the discussion from our previous article pointing out that Milk + Cookies has no specific genre restrictions: the festival has seen house from Kaytranada, rap from Gunna, and R&B from Majid Jordan. Although a pop-soul Grammy winner is a distinct type of headliner, it aligns with the festival’s ethos of connecting with the audience rather than adhering to a genre.

“People are constantly questioning how Kaytranada, Gunna, and Olivia Dean find themselves on the same line-up,” stated Chase Freeman, Head of Marketing at Milk + Cookies. “The sound may differ, but the feeling remains consistent. That’s the only guideline we’ve ever followed. We curate for the audience present, not for a specific genre; they crave the atmosphere as much as the name on the poster. Three years in, this is what South Africa has shown us. We initially came to host a show and ended up co-creating something meaningful with the local community, changing how we approach events elsewhere as well.”

This festival is a part of the broader Milk + Cookies Music Week, which the organizers stated will provide further details in the upcoming weeks.
