Spinners makes its comeback in Season 2. Familiarize yourself with the spinning terminology, from Target Slide to Drift Barrier.

Spinners is back for Season 2 on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161). If you intend to catch Episode 1 this Sunday evening, it’s essential to know the lingo. The spinning community has its unique lexicon, and the show is ready to dish out plenty of it.

The “Underdogs” have left Cape Town and made their way to Johannesburg, where the competition intensifies, rivalries ignite, and the streets of Soweto become the battleground. Cape Town shaped their journey. Will Johannesburg transform them?

Your spinning lingo cheat sheet

Before you gear up, here are the key terms you should be aware of, as highlighted in Mzansi Magic’s season guide:

Target Slide: The driver performs a tight spin around a designated target while ensuring the vehicle remains within a specified area. The objective is to achieve a clean, controlled rotation without making contact with the target.

Kitchen: The driver launches the car into a high-speed rollback between two barriers, reversing as closely as possible to the rear wall. It requires excellent timing and precision.

Make-Out Corner: The driver angles the car into a confined, enclosed area without touching the side barriers. The challenge lies in positioning the vehicle correctly while maintaining speed and style.

Side2Side Wall: The driver shifts the vehicle from one side of an obstacle to the other, coming as close as possible to the walls repeatedly. This maneuver demonstrates quick weight transfer and exacting car control.

Drift Barrier: The driver executes a powerslide beside a barrier, keeping the car sideways and extremely near the wall. The aim is to achieve maximum proximity without any contact, combining speed, angle, and throttle management.

Who to watch for in Episode 1

Fan favorites Ethan (Cantona James), Trevor (Braedon Buys), Shane (Dillon Windvogel), Angelo (Nahum Hughes), and Amber (Chelsea Thomas) return, now joined by the Maseko siblings: the determined Amahle (Luyanda Zwane) and her spontaneous older brother Sayi (Aphiwe Mkefe), along with Sayi’s loyal friend Gatsha (Siyamthanda Bangani). Look forward to fresh alliances, new rivalries, and some unexpected twists.

The premiere episode also features special guest appearances by Siv Ngesi as himself, Kayla Oliphant representing Team Kayla, and Anton Taylor serving as the MC for the Jo’burg spinning scene.

That cliffhanger, though

Just when it seems that Ethan is about to dominate the scene, his past unexpectedly resurfaces, jeopardizing all he has worked to achieve. What past elements have come back to haunt him? Tune in for the rest of the season to uncover the mystery.

The soundtrack is crafted by Lance Stehr, acclaimed for his contributions to Tsotsi, Yizo Yizo, and Shaka iLembe. Featuring music from Zola7 and Jozi, along with emerging artists Ben Major and DJ Sneja, it’s characterized as fresh, authentic, and a hint nostalgic.
