Springbok centre Damian de Allende noted that fans have previously directed profanity at players on the streets, although this time has been different.

Damian de Allende, a centre for the Springboks, reflected on the relatively mild response from fans following the team’s unexpected 38–22 loss to the Wallabies at Ellis Park last week.

He compared this reaction to the aftermath of a similar defeat in 2016, when fans unleashed criticism at players after Ireland’s first victory over South Africa on home soil, where Ireland triumphed 26–20 in Cape Town despite having only 14 players on the field.

Springboks aim for redemption

The Springboks faced their second-ever defeat at Ellis Park, their first loss at this venue since 1963, after losing a 22–0 lead in the early stages of the Rugby Championship match last Saturday.

Tension was palpable as South African sports enthusiasts, known for their passionate support, unleashed boos and jeers during the match, showing their frustration towards referee Ben O’Keeffe and Australian players as they processed the surprising turn of events.

However, the harsh criticism faced by the Springboks has been particularly challenging. As the players exited the field, they encountered minimal encouragement, with both supporters and analysts expressing their discontent, despite some voices advocating for patience and understanding.

“Back in 2016, we were confronted with a lot of swearing as we headed to the gym. This year, however, has felt much better,” said De Allende.

“Our supporters have maintained a positive outlook, which is refreshing. Naturally, we are very upset about Saturday’s outcome and disappointed for letting our fans down.

“Still, it is encouraging to see fans being more supportive on our way to the gym. We recognize we can’t succeed without them, but we also understand the challenges we faced last weekend, and we aim to confront these issues head-on this week.”

De Allende: ‘Everything happens for a reason’

He asserted that the Springboks have gained valuable insights from this defeat.

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. We started off strongly on Saturday, but things did not unfold as anticipated. Setbacks are part of every team’s journey, and they happen to everyone around the world.

De Allende emphasized the importance of being part of a team that recognizes the issues and is committed to addressing them.

“I have experienced team dynamics where difficulties lead to negativity, and attempts to resolve issues can be fruitless. However, here, we have already identified solutions, which is a significant positive for me.”
