The murder trial of seven individuals charged with the killing of Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his companion Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane has drawn renewed scrutiny toward the money purportedly connected with the rapper’s death, particularly with allegations of a R10 million contract circulating online.

During the ongoing trials at the Durban High Court, the State has provided evidence detailing the alleged premeditation, monitoring, and monetary transactions in connection to the shooting that occurred on Florida Road in February 2023. Nonetheless, the R10 million figure and claims regarding the appropriation of those funds among the individuals involved have not been substantiated as court evidence in that specific context.

One notable financial aspect presented is a transaction involving over R800,000 deposited into the account of accused Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni around the time of the murders. While the State has questioned the nature of this transaction, the defense argues that it pertains to a legitimate business engagement.

According to evidence heard in court, the unknown mastermind behind AKA’s murder allegedly paid R10 million for his life. Who has that amount and wanted him gone?

These allegations raise important questions regarding the possible financier of the operation and whether the individual who supposedly orchestrated the murder has been identified.

CCTV footage introduced in court examines the activities of those alleged to have carried out the attack. This footage reportedly tracks one of the accused as he followed AKA from King Shaka International Airport, with surveillance continuing as the rapper moved through various locations, including toll gates, hotels, and restaurants.

According to the State’s argument, these movements were part of a meticulously arranged plan culminating in the shooting outside Wish restaurant on Florida Road on 10 February 2023. The fatal shooting of AKA and Tibz shocked the South African public and ended the lives of two notable personalities.

The seven individuals on trial include Lindokuhle Thabani Mkhwanazi, Lindani Zenzele Ndimande, Siyanda Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, Lindokuhle Lindo Ndimande, and brothers Siyabonga Gezani Ndimande and Malusi Dave Ndimande.

The defendants have entered not guilty pleas to charges that encompass conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of murder, attempted murder, and various firearm-related offenses.

Evidence relating to ballistics has reportedly connected firearms taken from some of the accused to the shooting on Florida Road and a prior homicide involving a taxi leader in 2022. Eyewitness testimonies have been included, with some witnesses presenting their accounts remotely due to safety concerns. The prosecution plans to summon around 45 witnesses to testify.

Despite the evidence provided thus far, the identity of who allegedly commissioned the murders remains a crucial focus for public interest. While financial transactions and the alleged follow-ups have generated attention, there is still no public identification of those considered to be behind the attack.

The R10 million figure continues to stir discussions online, but speculation regarding the alleged financial arrangements and the identity of a potential mastermind needs differentiation from what has been tested in court.

For those in South Africa who witnessed AKA’s journey from a prominent hip-hop artist to a significant cultural figure, the trial resonates deeply beyond legal implications. Known for hits like “All Eyes on Me” and “Lemons,” the rapper left a lasting impact on the music and fashion scenes.

The joint demise of AKA and Tibz has created a profound void in the entertainment sector and has sparked widespread demands for justice. The notion that the assassination involved extensive planning and possible financial underpinnings has intensified public intrigue in the case.

As the trial unfolds, the State will carry on with its presentation of evidence while the defense counters the allegations. The proceeding is expected to scrutinize the accused’s actions, the financial dealings involved, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

For the time being, the identity of the presumed orchestrator of the murders remains an unresolved issue in the public discourse surrounding the case. It remains to be seen if forthcoming evidence will clarify the alleged financial dealings and reveal the individuals implicated in the attack.

As the trial progresses, South Africa remains attentive for updates in a case that has captivated the nation’s interest as one of its most high-profile murder investigations.
