‘The Pitt’ star Noah Wyle is People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2026. Here’s the reaction, the pushback and why this title always divides opinion.

The Pitt actor Noah Wyle has been declared People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2026. At the age of 55, he joins an elite list that features his ER co-star George Clooney, a two-time recipient (1997 and 2006), along with other luminaries like Idris Elba and Michael B. Jordan.

Nevertheless, the announcement was met with numerous unflattering remarks on social media platforms such as X, Instagram, and TikTok.

‘Sounded like a prank’

Wyle expressed to People that the news of this accolade “sounded like a prank”. He mentioned that he never anticipated it “in a million years”. Reportedly, his wife, Sara Wells, encouraged him to accept the honour, explaining that it reflected positively on her taste as well as on who he is as a husband and father.

He further indicated that he anticipates considerable teasing at home.

The timing is significant. After stepping away from the ER limelight for years, Wyle is currently experiencing a vibrant resurgence portraying the intense, bearded Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in The Pitt. According to Variety, Clooney humorously suggested earlier this year the creation of a “Sexiest Man Still Alive” category and nominated his former co-star.

Love, laughs and pushback

The scant praise he has received regarding the nomination has focused on the “silver fox” appeal and a recognition long overdue for a man who featured in a 1996 “Sexy Men of ER” photoshoot alongside Clooney, as reported by Page Six. A segment of fans from The Pitt and 90s television regard his selection as an acknowledgment of charm and a peak in midlife in an industry that tends to favour youthful talent.

Conversely, many critics have questioned the decision, humorously suggesting that the other contenders were deceased (considering the title is “sexiest man alive”). There were also comments regarding his age, although previous winners like Sean Connery (59 in 1989), Patrick Dempsey (57 in 2023), and Harrison Ford (56 in 1998) were also older or near the same age when they received the title.

Moreover, some have pointed out the accolade’s historical lack of racial diversity, a topic that has dogged the franchise for years.

A tradition built on arguments

This distinction originated almost inadvertently in 1985 when People editors, grappling with a challenging interview with Mel Gibson, transformed a passing comment into a headline. It has been a source of division ever since.

Brad Pitt has expressed his discomfort with the attention that comes with the title, while Jonathan Bailey’s 2025 selection as the first openly gay winner was largely celebrated but still yielded contention. It is commonly believed that such debates ultimately drive sales for the magazine.

Over the course of 41 years, the interpretation has evolved to encompass qualities like humour, warmth, and professional achievement. Wyle has embraced it with good humour, joking about the playful banter and making an appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast shortly after the news broke.
