Actor Sello Maake KaNcube
Sello Maake KaNcube reflects on the role that transformed his career.
The renowned actor has recently discussed the profound influence of Archie Moroka, the prominent character he portrayed in the popular soap opera Generations; a name that many South Africans continue to identify him by.
In an interview with The Citizen, Maake KaNcube revealed that he did not fully grasp how significantly Archie had connected with the audience until long after he left the series.
“I was shocked that people admired the character so much and even called me by the name,” he stated.
As the clever and impactful heir of the Moroka family, he appeared alongside Connie Ferguson’s Karabo Moroka, solidifying them as one of the most memorable pairs in South African television history.
The character of Archie drew inspiration from advertising innovator Peter Vundla, and Maake KaNcube contends that the narrative set new precedents by showcasing young black individuals succeeding in corporate environments.
“It is where people saw black people in the corporate space for the first time; it was ground-breaking. Archie became a very inspirational character in people’s lives,” he reflected.
His reminiscences come in advance of his participation at the forthcoming iPendoring Awards, where he will once again embody the beloved character.
Scheduled from 2 to 4 December, the event will feature its Indigenous Language Imbizo, commemorating 30 years of celebrating creativity and promoting South Africa’s indigenous languages.
Maake KaNcube’s contributions continue to receive recognition beyond his acting career.
On 22 November, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the National Film & Television Awards, a moment he described as profoundly emotional.
Looking back on his path, he shared, “Standing on that stage, I found myself thinking back to 1975. A young boy at Mofolo Community Hall, watching a play for the very first time… it lit a fire that has burned for fifty years.”
