Noted producer and DJ DJ Maphorisa has sparked discussions on social media regarding the current landscape of South African hip hop.

Via X, the artist expressed his thoughts, calling on rappers to put aside their differences and collaborate.

“SA hiphop guys need to work together this camp camp thing is not working 💔,” he wrote.

This post resonated quickly, garnering responses from artists and fans alike, who shared a range of opinions on the state of the genre.

Performer Moonchild Sanelly expressed her endorsement of Maphorisa’s message, suggesting he has the potential to unite fractured elements of the industry.

“Ur the one who is able to unite everyone Pho 🙌🏾 ego less always 💙,” she replied.

Conversely, some users pinpointed the issue to the heavy influence of international styles on local artists.

“SA Hip Hop turned trash the moment these rappers duplicated American sound….Khuli Chana and Morafe can save it if it’s not too late,” one user noted, referring to established rapper Khuli Chana and hip hop group Morafe.

Others defended the competitive spirit inherent in hip hop, arguing that rivalry has long been part of the genre’s identity.

“Unlike Amapiano, Hip Hop has always and will depend on beef to make numbers, it’s competitive like maskandi in SA…” said another user.

Nevertheless, many echoed Maphorisa’s plea for unity, contrasting it with the cooperation seen in the amapiano scene.

“They need to collaborate to revive it,” one person commented.

Another remarked, “Finally somebody said it, it’s sad man. Amapiano guys are so united, eat together, collaborate with each other, while Hip Hop is more about competition, for worse, non beneficial competition.”
