Veteran house music artists from South Africa, Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini, reunited on stage after being apart for over 15 years.
This live performance marked a significant occasion as it was the first time in about a decade and a half that these two prominent musicians showcased their talents together, quickly capturing the interest of fans on social media.
Many regarded this moment as a return to their roots, reflecting on the significant impact both artists had on shaping the early landscape of modern South African house music.
Prior to their professional split, the duo contributed to a creative movement that defined the essence of the country’s soulful and Afro-house genres in the late 2000s.
During this era, collaborations between Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini saw a blend of production and songwriting that left an enduring legacy.
Notably, their joint hit “Juju,” released in 2011, continues to be one of their last significant collaborations.
The contributions made through Black Coffee’s projects like Have Another One and Home Brewed established a foundation for a sound that later achieved global recognition.
Throughout the years, both artists carved out distinguished careers on their own, which has made their prolonged absence from each other’s artistic endeavors more apparent.
During their recent performance, Zakes Bantwini took a moment to express the importance of this reunion and the path that brought them to this shared platform.
“I don’t know the last time I stood to my brother right here and shared a microphone, probably 15 years ago and today marks that the world has been meaning to have us standing next to each other but because of you we did,” he stated.
He also discussed the profound connection music has held in their lives, stating: “Music to us has always been more than just notes, it has always spoken to us in different languages, it has touched us all spiritually and otherwise but our introduction to music and the love of music became so colourful because there was pain in our lives.”
