Amapiano stars Kelvin Momo and Kabza de Small are currently engaged in a legal conflict concerning money from their notable collaboration, with singer Babalwa M also getting involved.
Initially a successful partnership under the Piano Hub label, it has devolved into disagreements over unpaid royalties related to a project released six years ago under Momo’s Private School.
This project, once celebrated within the genre, has become the subject of claims regarding broken agreements and fiscal disputes.
At the heart of the issue is a claim of R1 million, with Kelvin Momo, whose real name is Thato Ledwaba, asserting that he is owed money for “royalties and failing contractual obligations.”
According to reports from Buzz Life, the producer contends that the payments promised every six months were never received, raising concerns about how the finances were managed in business dealings.
In contrast, Kabza de Small, known as Kabelo Motha, disputes the claim that he owes any royalties.
The situation has become more complicated with Babalwa M stepping in to assert her right to compensation for her contribution to the project.
However, Kabza reportedly maintains that there was no formal agreement with the vocalist, which raises questions about any potential payments to her.
As time has passed, tensions among the involved parties appear to have elevated.
While Momo reportedly received just above R86,000 in 2021, he now claims this amount is insufficient, which has escalated the situation.
This disagreement has reached the Johannesburg High Court, turning what was once a strong musical collaboration into a legal dispute.
