Early Saturday morning, a team of armed police officers reportedly entered a residence in Westridge, Mitchells Plain, looking for Fadiel Adams, leader of the National Coloured Congress (NCC) and a Member of Parliament, according to statements from his party.
The NCC claims that around 15 officers accessed the home at approximately 4 am. Adams, who is believed to have vacated the property two months prior, was not present during the raid. The current tenants, a woman with her young children, allegedly faced harassment throughout the incident.
The party contends that the officers, some of whom wore balaclavas, aimed their firearms at the residents, forcibly took photographs of their identification documents, failed to identify themselves, and did not show a search or arrest warrant. It was reported that a 12-year-old boy was assaulted, which left his family shaken.
Adams has labeled the event as unlawful and intends to file criminal charges, including intimidation, against the officers involved and a high-ranking SAPS official. The NCC has characterized the incident as an attempted kidnapping, alleging it is part of a broader dispute tied to Adams’ public allegations of corruption within the police force. He is set to hold a press conference on Sunday at Parliament.
MDN News has contacted the South African Police Service (SAPS) for a statement, but no reply had been received by the time of publication. The situation is still developing.
As the founder of the NCC and a member of the Parliamentary Police Portfolio Committee, Adams has been outspoken in recent months regarding alleged misconduct in law enforcement and local government issues in Cape Town.
