Matthijs de Ligt will not participate in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup following back surgery performed on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Softfootball reports that the decision follows six months of intensive treatment, during which the player expressed disappointment at being unable to contribute to Manchester United FC.
This was his statement:
After 6 months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left. I’m disappointed I couldn’t help the team the last 6 months and obviously missing out on the World Cup, but I’m looking forward to doing everything to get back in front of the fans and feeling better again!
During his absence, significant changes occurred at Manchester United, including the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, which led to Michael Carrick being appointed as interim manager. Carrick is anticipated to be confirmed as the full-time manager by the end of the season.
