The African National Congress (ANC) has officially removed Douglas Seleke Maimane from his roles as Executive Mayor and Proportional Representation Councillor for the Madibeng Local Municipality, effective immediately.
This decision was made by the ANC North West Provincial Executive Committee, with the agreement and authority of the Office of the Secretary General.
Reports indicate that the ANC Caucus in Madibeng is set to carry out this decision through legal processes within the Council.
“The ANC deploys its cadres to serve the people and not to serve themselves. A deployment to public office is a responsibility held on behalf of our communities, and it is held only for as long as the cadre advances the movement’s mandate. Where that mandate is not advanced, the movement will act accordingly. No individual ambition will be allowed to stand above the needs of the people.
“The discipline of all ANC councillors and public representatives is under careful watch. A three-line whip applies in every council and caucus, and the line of march of the movement obtains. Our public representatives are expected to function within the discipline of the caucus, to account to the structures of the movement, and to keep faith with the communities who elected them. This standard will be applied consistently, and without fear or favour,” the statement reads.
It is emphasized that ANC municipalities have a responsibility to focus on the essential needs of the community, including the provision of basic services, employment opportunities, and community safety. Proper maintenance of roads, reliable water and electricity supply, efficient waste collection, and upkeep of cleanliness and security in towns and townships are critical.
“These are not favours to be granted; they are the rightful expectations of the people. This call is directed not only to our public representatives but equally to the public servants who administer our municipalities. The administration exists to serve the public. We expect officials to discharge their statutory duties diligently, to safeguard public resources, and to place the residents they serve at the centre of every decision. Political leadership and administration must work together, in a common purpose, for the people.
Founded in 1912, the African National Congress is dedicated to serving the citizens of South Africa. The local government is where this commitment is tested most visibly. The ANC will continue to make necessary decisions to ensure that all municipalities prioritize the needs of the public, while also maintaining the movement’s discipline in every structure,” the statement concludes.
