MAHIKENG – Authorities in North West have reported that the inquiry into the assassination of community advocate Thato Molosankwe has revealed possible ties to a larger organized crime group, which is thought to be responsible for various violent offenses, including homicides, armed robberies, and drug trafficking.
During a press briefing on Friday, Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Ryno Naidoo confirmed the arrests of two individuals, aged 28 and 38, in connection with Molosankwe’s death.
Prior to speaking with the media, Naidoo mentioned that officials from SAPS had met with the Molosankwe family to provide them with the latest updates directly from the investigators.
“It was important that the family heard this news directly from the South African Police Service before it was shared publicly,” Naidoo stated.
Significant development in the high-profile murder case
Molosankwe was shot and killed at his residence in Mahikeng on 20 May 2026, following an attack by armed assailants who reportedly fled on foot before using a previously positioned getaway vehicle.
In response, the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit quickly initiated a thorough investigation, supported by Crime Intelligence, forensic experts, and other specialized units.
Naidoo indicated that investigators tirelessly analyzed forensic data, interviewed witnesses, and pursued intelligence-driven leads, leading to the recent arrests.
The first suspect was detained just three days after the incident, on 23 May 2026, in relation to the homicides of local business owners Sergio and Marlene Gomez. Authorities report that he has remained in police custody and is also implicated in Molosankwe’s murder.
The second suspect was located and apprehended at an apartment in Mmabatho Extension 39.
Police believe they have disrupted an organized crime network
Naidoo characterized the arrests as a crucial step forward, yet emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.
Law enforcement is actively seeking additional individuals believed to have been involved in the orchestration and execution of the murder.
They are also focused on recovering the firearms allegedly used during the incident and seizing the getaway vehicle.
“We do confirm that we are aware of the whereabouts of the vehicle and we are in the process of seizing it,” Naidoo stated.
He noted that the evidence gathered so far indicates a connection between the suspects and a larger criminal organization.
“As police, we do believe that we have broken the back of a syndicate allegedly involved in several serious and violent crimes, including murders, business robberies and the illegal dealing of drugs.”
Investigating motives related to activism
While the exact motive behind Molosankwe’s murder remains undetermined, Naidoo remarked that investigators have not dismissed the idea that his vocal opposition to crime could have led to him being targeted.
He underscored that detectives will persist in following the evidence wherever it may lead until the complete truth is revealed in court.
“The investigation has not been concluded,” he asserted.
A message to criminal elements
Naidoo commended the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, Crime Intelligence, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), and forensic professionals for their collaborative efforts that secured this breakthrough.
He also issued a warning to organized criminal groups operating in the area.
“You may evade arrest temporarily, but justice has a way of catching up.”
The two suspects are anticipated to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 July 2026, as police continue their search for others believed to have been involved in the murder.
The inquiry is ongoing, with further arrests anticipated as detectives work to dismantle the alleged criminal network.
