Throwback Vibes: The Cassper Nyovest Chronicles

Empires have emerged and collapsed in less time than Refiloe Phoolo has dedicated to convincing others of his status as the new school messiah of African music. Typically, artists are granted about 15 minutes to showcase their talent. However, when you factor in the negotiations with promoters for fair pay and disputes over sound equipment, you may only end up with approximately 3:57 minutes to make an impact. During that short span, one might either complain about lack of appreciation in the industry or, like Cassper Nyovest, create a track like ‘Doc Shebeleza’ and dominate the scene.

“And after I made the decision to drop out I had that much more to prove to myself and everyone around me.” Cassper’s past relationship with actress and presenter Boity Thulo has earned him considerable respect. For a time, this relationship enhanced his stature among peers who often fantasized about such connections. However, even the appeal of being with Boity eventually reaches a limit. At that time, people were hesitant to take seriously a rapper who sported a style reminiscent of kwaito stars and wore a ponytail—unique for someone not named Steven Seagal—especially when South African hip-hop was struggling to carve its niche alongside more established genres like house and kwaito. He faced skepticism from veterans until Jabba’s emergence changed the narrative. “Yeah, I still go through it. People judge me based on my clothing, speech, lyric delivery, the setting of my videos, and the sound of tracks like ‘Wahala,’ saying I’m not a rapper. They claim I’m not aligned with hip hop. Recall that Jabba faced similar challenges. Now he’s a major figure in our industry,” he states.

Cassper, originating from Mahikeng, naturally aligned with an evolving rap style from the early 2000s, commonly referred to as motswako music, fostered by artists like Khuli Chana, JR, and HHP. When his career seemed to stagnate three years ago, HHP stepped in, adding his voice to the track ‘Wam Tseba Mtho’ and mentoring Cassper through tours and the intricacies of the music industry, which ultimately shaped his sound. “What people don’t realize is that kwaito isn’t just a genre; it’s a tradition that reflects our identity. It’s akin to the beads we wear. It’s the rhythm of Africa. While hip hop originated in the U.S. through jazz and soul, our hip hop will always be distinct because of our unique musical heritage. The fusion of kwaito and house is inherent to us. Developing our sound means recognizing existing indigenous music while gradually distinguishing kwaito from hip hop. As long as we focus on quality and growth, we’re on the right path,” he elaborates. “My inspirations growing up included figures like Doc Shebeleza and Mandoza, who were relatable and authentic. Choosing hip hop today doesn’t negate those influences. They are part of my identity, reflected in my demeanor and outlook. A lot of hip hop veterans wish for a return to the old ways, but the essence of kwaito-house remains part of who we are.”
