British actor David Jonsson has received the mantle of the Black Panther for the upcoming third chapter of the Marvel franchise.
This news was revealed by Ryan Coogler, the film’s creator and director, alongside Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, during the Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con International event.
In this coming-of-age narrative, Jonsson will portray the adult Prince T’Challa, the offspring of King T’Challa. His character’s mother is Nakia, the beloved of King T’Challa. The character was first presented in the second film by young actor Divine Love Konadu-Sun.
Jonsson is stepping into the role previously held by Chadwick Boseman, who embodied the character in the inaugural film, which debuted in 2018. That film became one of the top-grossing releases of its year, earning $1.35 billion (R22,500,112,500) globally, while its sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) garnered $859 million (R14,316,738,250).
Boseman passed away at the age of 43 in August 2020 after a prolonged fight against prostate cancer.
Originating from London, Jonsson (32) is familiar with the screen, having appeared in projects such as the British detective series Endeavour in 2018. He subsequently portrayed Augustus “Gus” Sackey in Industry.
He starred in The Long Walk in 2025 and earned the Bafta rising star award that same year, as reported by The Guardian.
David Jonsson is the new Black Panther and clips of him are already going viral. Straw Hat Goofy sat with him a year ago talking about Black Panther’s impact : it got emotional.
David has that thing you can’t explain. The same thing Chad had. 🖤
