Next Saturday’s Announcement: New Bafana Bafana Coach to Be Revealed, With Pitso Mosimane as Front-Runner

admin August 3, 2026 3 minutes read

Next Saturday, clarity regarding the future of Bafana Bafana is expected when the South African Football Association (SAFA) reveals the next head coach for the national team, a decision that may determine the trajectory of football in South Africa for years to come.

This announcement will follow a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting set for 8 August, where officials at SAFA are anticipated to approve the recommendation from the association’s technical committee.

This follows the completion of Hugo Broos’ five-year stint as head coach of Bafana Bafana. The Belgian’s exit marks the conclusion of a successful era, including a historic bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and a revitalized belief in the team.

During Broos’ farewell press briefing, SAFA president Danny Jordaan stated that the ultimate decision will be made after the NEC convenes next weekend.

“Next week Saturday we will have a NEC meeting and that is when a decision will be taken,” Jordaan said.

SAFA Technical Committee Focuses on Coaching Candidates

The pressure now lies with SAFA’s technical committee, chaired by Jack Maluleke, to present a candidate who can continue the progress made under Broos.

The committee has already engaged with at least four domestic coaches as part of its selection process. While multiple candidates have been evaluated, there seems to be increasing backing within SAFA for the selection of a South African coach.

This change in perspective follows a time when local coaches have achieved significant success across Africa, demonstrating their ability to perform at the continent’s highest levels.

SAFA officials believe that a locally sourced coach might offer a better comprehension of the domestic football environment while upholding the competitive standards set in recent times.

Pitso Mosimane Considered Leading Contender for Coach Position

Among those speculated for the role, former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane is often regarded as the frontrunner.

Mosimane’s success in African football has reinforced his status as one of the continent’s most esteemed coaches. His background includes triumphs in domestic leagues as well as continental competitions, positioning him as a strong candidate for returning to lead the national team.

A return would signify a significant moment for South African football, with Mosimane already accustomed to the pressures and expectations of managing Bafana Bafana.

Nevertheless, SAFA is expected to thoroughly evaluate all available options before finalizing their announcement, as the selected coach will face immediate challenges.

New Coach Will Have Limited Time Before AFCON Qualifiers

Whoever is appointed will have a tight schedule to prepare before Bafana Bafana’s qualification campaign kicks off for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa is set to meet Guinea in their first qualifier between 23 and 25 September, leaving the new coach with a brief period to evaluate players, develop strategies, and foster team chemistry.

The commencement of the Betway Premiership season this weekend could serve as a crucial opportunity for the new coach to observe local talent and identify players who might enhance the national squad.

As the next chapter for Bafana Bafana unfolds, SAFA’s choice will carry substantial implications. The decision will not only shape the immediate future of the team but could also define South Africa’s ambitions on the African football scene for the years to come.
