Emtee is released after spending 16 days in jail as his wife retracts her case. The rapper exited the Johannesburg Correctional Centre on Wednesday after a magistrate from Midrand approved his bail set at R2,000. His detention followed his arrest for violating a protection order issued by his estranged spouse, Nicole Chinsamy.
Emtee Walks Free After 16 Days In Custody As Wife Withdraws CaseAs reported by TimesLive, the initial court session was set for the possible start of a trial. However, the magistrate reviewed new information after Chinsamy formally withdrew the case on Monday. During her testimony, she stated: “I decided to withdraw the case. I’d like to close this chapter and move on with my life.”
Emtee chose to remain silent. His lawyer, Kwena Manamela, submitted an affidavit outlining the difficulties caused by the arrest. It indicated that the family of Ndevu, including his parents and three young children, faced financial hardships, with rent and education fees left unpaid since his incarceration.
Bail was granted under specific conditions. Emtee is prohibited from violating the existing protection order, which includes restrictions on posting about Chinsamy on social media platforms. However, the court lifted one limitation. He is now permitted to contact her but only regarding matters that involve their three children. He is scheduled to return to court on 10 September for further discussions.
This case is part of a broader ongoing legal and personal struggle that has been in the public eye for several years. Chinsamy initially secured the protection order in 2023, which prevented Emtee from verbally abusing or harassing her online. In June, he surrendered to police following an alleged altercation at her residence and was detained for one night. He received R1,000 bail under strict measures that included a total prohibition on contacting her and required him to delete previous posts about her.
These conditions were later violated. In mid-August, his bail was revoked after he reportedly sent messages to Chinsamy that included derogatory language. He was taken back into custody at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre until the hearing on Wednesday.
During his time in jail, disagreements arose between his family and his current partner, Nandi Ndathane. Emtee’s parents traveled to Gauteng to reclaim his belongings, which included his car, phones, and bank cards, expressing concerns over unpaid rent. This dispute triggered further applications for protection orders and public confrontations that intensified while the rapper was incarcerated.
While Emtee was imprisoned, a wave of support emerged on social media under the hashtag #FreeEmtee. Fans and fellow musicians utilized the hashtag to advocate for his release and display solidarity. Among those supporting him was Grammy-winning producer Zakes Bantwini, who shared a message of prayer with the hashtag. Some supporters claimed to have initiated the campaign, keeping the issue alive on social media until the court granted bail. As the news broke on Wednesday, the same hashtag was revived in celebration as fans marked the rapper’s release.
The couple, who have three children together, have yet to finalize their divorce. Emtee has previously discussed the challenges stemming from their separation, with both parties having previously made accusations of abuse against each other.
