Canan Moodie to Play on the Wing for the Springboks in Cape Town
Following a difficult loss in their first match of the Rugby Championship against Australia at Ellis Park, Springbok utility back Canan Moodie emphasized the necessity of focusing on the positives leading up to and during the game for a better outcome this weekend.
The Springboks were defeated 38-22 at Ellis Park last week, ending up without any points, marking an unfortunate start to their campaign.
Now, they must rectify their performance in Cape Town on Saturday and aim for a bonus-point victory to regain momentum. Moodie noted that the team understands what needs to be done to achieve this goal.
“We are all obviously very disappointed with our performance on Saturday (in the first Test). The guys are hurting, but we have done a review, had our meeting and we know what we have to do to get it right this (coming) weekend,” said Moodie.
“The main focus for us it to stack the positives this week and make sure that when we go out there on Saturday, that we have a clear plan in what we want to do and make sure we execute it on the day.”
Importance of Balance
Achieving the right balance will be a focal point for the team this week as the Springboks strayed from their core strengths in the recent match.
The Boks aim to enhance their kicking game, which was virtually absent during their last outing. With anticipated rainy conditions for the upcoming match, precision in this area will be crucial.
“To set things right we have to have balance and control in our game. You know, defence complementing attack and the attack working well with the kicking game,” explained Moodie.
“So we have to get the control and balance right this weekend, no matter what comes weather-wise. We just have to be prepared and ready for whatever comes on Saturday.”
Although Moodie has mainly played as an outside centre for his franchise and the national team recently, he will revert to the wing for this weekend’s match after filling that role last week.
Due to injuries to Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe, the Boks find themselves somewhat short on the wings, but the return of Cheslin Kolbe will bolster their ranks. Moodie will don the No 14 jersey for the match.
