New Developments in Peet Viljoen’s R27 Million Property Fraud Case Amid Plea Deal Talks
The ongoing R27 million property fraud case involving Peet Viljoen in Johannesburg has taken a significant turn, with attorneys indicating active plea deal discussions.
The former reality TV star attended a session at the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court along with four other defendants. Collectively, they are confronted with nearly 400 allegations concerning the purported illicit sale of 46 properties belonging to the City of Johannesburg.
Prosecutors have indicated that Viljoen is engaged in detailed conversations regarding a possible plea agreement. However, no agreements have been reached at this point.
This case has been adjourned to facilitate further legal proceedings, with Viljoen remaining incarcerated at Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria.
Court Appearance and Plea Negotiations
Viljoen, who is known for his role alongside his Real Housewives of Pretoria spouse Melany “Mel” Viljoen, faces accusations of fraud, theft, forgery, uttering, and corruption.
The allegations are tied to properties that were supposedly sold unlawfully starting in 2010, with the municipal land estimated to be worth around R27 million.
According to the state, the accused have allegedly established a corrupt syndicate engaged in property transactions. They are said to have utilized forged documents to transfer municipal properties to private entities.
Viljoen’s bail request was denied in August, and his appeal for bail was also rejected.
Concerns were raised by his legal team regarding an alleged assault within Kgosi Mampuru II prison, claiming he did not receive prompt medical care following the incident.
Viljoen has confirmed the occurrence to the press, but the Department of Correctional Services has stated that there are no records of such an event.
Viljoen’s Co-accused: Who Are They?
The individuals accused alongside Viljoen are Edwin Resimate Maringa, Wiets Lourens Nell, Dorah Madisa, and Edmund Mkhetwa Sibisi.
Maringa, a lawyer based in Johannesburg, reportedly utilized a dormant company named Eildoug Investments to serve as the seller for the municipal properties.
Businessman Nell is alleged to have collaborated with Viljoen in promoting the properties to potential buyers, assuring them of the legality of the deals.
Former City of Johannesburg staff member Madisa is said to have interacted with prospective purchasers, guaranteeing that the municipality sanctioned the sales.
Sibisi, a former deputy registrar at the Pretoria Deeds Office, is accused of handling fraudulent property transfers. It is alleged that he received R5,000 from Viljoen for each illegal transaction he processed.
Nell was not present during the late October court session due to major heart surgery, with his legal team providing a medical certificate to validate his absence.
When will Peet Viljoen make his next court appearance?
Viljoen is set to return to court on 3 November 2026. In contrast, his co-defendants are scheduled to appear on 30 November.
This postponement allows the prosecution to finalize the disclosure of the updated charge sheet and relevant documents. Additionally, applications for legal aid are in progress.
The proceedings in November will also provide Nell with extra time to recuperate from his surgery.
The results of the aforementioned plea discussions may play a crucial role in influencing the future trajectory of the case, especially considering the range and severity of the charges, alongside the value of the properties involved.
