Analyzing Paul Scholes’ Signature Play as Mainoo Charts His Unique Journey

From Scholes to Mainoo: Tracing the Evolution of a Footballing Legacy
A recent episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents on YouTube revisited the exceptional talent of Paul Scholes. During the discussion, Ferdinand and his guest reminisced about one of the legendary Manchester United midfielder’s most memorable moves— a clever body feint that often left defenders bewildered, as reported by Softfootball.

Ferdinand’s guest expressed that this was his favorite moment involving Scholes.

“So my favorite Scholes’ move was that used to send defenders west. He said. He would have a little body feint towards the ball as it was coming towards him, let it roll, and then pick it up. Oh my, he’s took two players out — how’s he done that? He’s not even touched the ball.”

Ferdinand elaborated on the complexities involved in executing the move:

“But you know why you don’t see that often? Because it’s so hard to do. Your body weight’s giving over and past the ball from where it came from and then it’s on your weak foot. So your next touch with your weakest foot to set you up then pass. That’s what Scholes’ normal run was. He gets that yard but Scholes’ weren’t one to take two or three touches. He’d smash it straight away.”

The simplicity of the move belied the balance, timing, and control required to perform it—skills that were crucial to Scholes’ successful career.

“It was such a hard skill to do but it’s about awareness, about touch, spatial awareness as well and then the weight of the ball’s got to be right.”

Ferdinand continued with his analysis.

“So obviously, the weight of the ball is always right because it was me.”

Many have drawn parallels between Scholes and Kobbie Mainoo, a promising young player for United. Known for his calmness and ability to manage pressure, Mainoo has earned accolades similar to those once given to Scholes. However, his current situation with the club has shifted.

Softfootball reports that the 20-year-old has communicated his wish to leave on loan before the transfer window closes.

Mainoo has reportedly shared that he remains committed to United, but believes a loan move is essential for gaining consistent first-team experience and continuing his development, as he is not receiving enough playing time at the club.

This decision reflects a mature mindset from a player many regard as a close resemblance to Scholes in terms of intelligence and confidence. At Old Trafford or elsewhere, Mainoo’s future moves could significantly impact his potential to emulate Scholes’ legacy.
