The ANC in Ekurhuleni has raised significant concerns regarding the arrest of Democratic Alliance (DA) PR Councillor Kabelo Mabonko, who faces serious charges of murder and kidnapping.
Mabonko, aged 40 and hailing from Vosloorus, appeared in Benoni Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, following her arrest on Monday in Crystal Park.
It is alleged that Mabonko tracked down two men suspected of burglarizing her home earlier this month, subjecting them to torture, resulting in one of the men later dying from his injuries.
In a statement, ANC Ekurhuleni Regional Secretary Jongizizwe Dlabathi emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, asserting that no individual, regardless of their political ties or public role, has the right to take the law into their own hands.
“The ANC Ekurhuleni urges the SAPS and relevant law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation without fear or favor, and free from political interference,” stated Dlabathi.
Dlabathi further noted that if investigations reveal any criminal conduct, those responsible must face the full extent of the law. He highlighted that councillors have a duty as elected representatives to uphold the Constitution, respect the rule of law, and exhibit responsible leadership. Additionally, the ANC called on political parties not to protect their members from accountability.
“The ANC Ekurhuleni respects the courts’ independence and will not pre-empt the legal process’s outcome. However, we firmly believe that justice must be served, and due process must be adhered to within the legal framework,” Dlabathi added.
The party reiterated its stance that no one is above the law and called for justice as the legal proceedings continue.
