Head coach Alexandre Santos remains optimistic about the CAF Champions League final, despite his team’s loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg.
The Moroccan team faced a tight 1-0 defeat at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.
Aubrey Modiba delivered the lone goal of the match with an impressive free-kick in the 37th minute, giving Masandawana a slight edge ahead of the crucial second leg in Morocco next weekend.
However, Modiba’s performance was shadowed by concerns over a hamstring injury he sustained later in the game.
Sundowns had the upper hand for much of the match, generating numerous clear chances, yet they did not capitalize to extend their lead significantly.
Striker Brayan León missed several one-on-one opportunities that could have provided the hosts with a greater advantage.
Despite the defeat, Santos is hopeful that his team can still correct the result and claim the championship.
“We expected more opportunities to score, but we’re in the first half, and the second half will be next weekend,” stated Santos.
“We have to do more. For sure, we will do more because we can.”
The Portuguese coach acknowledged Sundowns as one of the continent’s top teams, yet he maintains that ASFAR has the potential to turn the tables at home.
“It was not easy because Sundowns is a very big team. A very strong team,” he commented.
“Every member of our team knows we have a very good chance to face Sundowns next week and to do what we want.
“It’s to score, reverse the result, and get the title.” The return leg will take place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday.
