Amapiano artist Babalwa M has addressed the backlash she received for opting out of performing at the Itsoseng Delicious event on the Day of Goodwill. She has clarified what she labels as an unprofessional and upsetting incident.
In her statements shared on social media, the acclaimed singer responded to rumors regarding her withdrawal, firmly rejecting assertions that she canceled due to excessive performance conditions or alcohol requests. Babalwa M indicated that the true matter resided in the behavior of the event promoters during the event.
“My choice to not proceed with the performance was not due to performance conditions or alcohol requests, as has been claimed,” she stated. “I have performed at numerous venues with incorrect conditions or no conditions at all, and I have consistently prioritized professionalism when engagements are managed properly.”
However, the situation reportedly intensified as tensions flared on site. Babalwa M claimed she faced verbal aggression from one of the promoters, who allegedly cursed at her and called her “crazy.” She noted that this type of treatment created an unsafe and uncomfortable atmosphere, making it untenable for her to carry on with the performance.
“In such circumstances, it became impossible to perform in a safe, respectful, and professional environment,” she remarked, emphasizing that performers should not have to tolerate mistreatment for the sake of a performance.
Confronting the misinformation circulating online, Babalwa M made it clear that she had committed to perform for a discounted fee. She also refuted the claims regarding alcohol expectations, explaining that the additional bottle mentioned in the promoters’ claims was supplied by a friend of her DJ and not by the event organizers. Furthermore, she pointed out the lack of basic hospitality, noting that neither she nor her team were provided with water.
“As an artist and professional, I hold that mutual respect is essential,” she stated. “Just as one would not finalize a purchase in a store where they are mistreated, I could not continue with a performance after facing disrespect.”
The singer concluded that leaving the venue was vital for the welfare of herself and her team. As a gesture of goodwill, she mentioned that she provided a full refund to the organizers before her departure, underlining that her choice was based on principles rather than entitlement.
Babalwa M called the incident an isolated occurrence and expressed her sincere apologies to fans who had hoped to see her perform at the event. She emphasized that this situation underscores the necessity of respect, professionalism, and upholding agreements in South Africa’s entertainment sector.
