Black Coffee Seeks Jail Time Amid Escalating Defamation War with Nota Baloyi

Black Coffee Fights Back: The Legal Battle Over Defamation with Nota Baloyi

The legal conflict between Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee and business figure Nota Baloyi has reached a significant turning point, with allegations suggesting that the renowned producer now seeks a prison sentence for Baloyi.

Reports from Sunday indicate that the DJ is looking for a 60-day jail term, claiming that Baloyi ignored a High Court order related to defamatory remarks made on social media.

This legal battle goes back to a December 2025 decision where the High Court required Baloyi to remove posts that accused the DJ of illegal activities and ties to criminal enterprises; he was also told to issue a public apology.

Instead of adhering to the court’s decision, Baloyi opted to contest it.

He has filed an appeal, asserting that the court misapplied defamation laws and violated his constitutional right to free speech.

In his legal documents, he argued that, “The case is not about defamation but an attempt to muzzle public discourse on issues that affect society.”

Moreover, Baloyi initiated a counterclaim against Black Coffee, accusing the DJ of using his wealth and influence to silence dissenting voices.

He is also pursuing damages amounting to R25,000, asserting that the situation has caused distress to his mother.

On the other hand, Black Coffee appears focused on ensuring accountability.

The DJ is pursuing legal action for what he interprets as a failure to comply with the court’s order, contending that neglecting such directives erodes the authority of the judicial system.

This is not the first time Baloyi has faced potential imprisonment due to his social media remarks.

In November 2024, he served two weeks of a 60-day sentence for contempt of court in a previous case involving rapper K.O, following accusations of defying an order to stop posting claims regarding K.O and his brother’s supposed involvement in AKA’s murder.
