Kaizer Chiefs are set to make a return to African football next season, but club icon Brian Baloyi has cautioned fans against over-celebrating.
Amakhosi secured a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup thanks to their third-place finish in the Betway Premiership.
However, Baloyi warns that excessive celebration of this position could signal a decline in standards at such a storied club.
In his appearance on the Soccer Beat podcast, the former goalkeeper addressed supporters who might be indulging in celebrations following the team’s 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United.
“You can’t be celebrating third position,” Baloyi stated. “It is taking your bar too low as a club and as fans.”
He acknowledged that it is positive to see Chiefs back in the continental competition after a challenging period of merely chasing a top-eight finish.
Nonetheless, Baloyi emphasized that the Glamour Boys lag behind rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
If Chiefs wish to compete at the highest level again, they face difficult decisions ahead, particularly regarding their technical team.
Baloyi firmly argued that the retention of co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze should not be a consideration.
“Chiefs need to get a top-class coach to take Chiefs back to being a top-class club,” he said.
