Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso contends that a challenging fixture list has significantly impacted the team’s attempt to defend their Betway Premiership title.
The loss of 3-2 to TS Galaxy on Tuesday night proved detrimental, altering the dynamics of the title contention.
This defeat means Sundowns no longer have control over their fate and must rely on Orlando Pirates faltering in their upcoming matches against Durban City FC and Orbit College FC.
Following the match, Cardoso pinpointed the packed football schedule as the primary factor contributing to his team’s recent difficulties.
“It was the calendar that beat us,” Cardoso remarked. The Portuguese manager noted Sundowns’ remarkable streak of 11 consecutive wins since January, which had led to fatigue beginning to affect the players.
“After we played Esperance, we drew twice, and we lost today,” he elaborated.
Cardoso, amidst mounting frustration from fans, defended his squad ardently and called for appreciation of their efforts throughout the season.
“These boys have been working all season very hard,” he stated.
He also reminded supporters of Sundowns’ competitiveness in multiple tournaments, including their journey to the CAF Champions League final.
The coach recognized that while fans are feeling disappointed, it is important to consider the broader context.
“They can criticise the coach, it’s not a problem for me, I have big shoulders,” he noted.
“But look at the big picture, and let’s make a proper analysis when we finish everything.”
With the title race precariously balanced, Sundowns’ chance of maintaining their championship relies on missteps from their top rivals.
Looking ahead, their immediate attention shifts to the first leg of the CAF Champions League final at Loftus Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
