Authorities have initiated a murder and attempted murder inquiry in relation to a deadly shooting that unfolded on the R21 highway towards O.R. Tambo International Airport on the evening of October 5, 2026.
The shooting, which occurred while a vehicle was receiving roadside assistance, resulted in one fatality and left another individual wounded from gunfire.
Initial reports from law enforcement indicate that the incident commenced when a Fiat’s driver faced a mechanical failure on the R21.
After the breakdown, the driver reached out to a friend for assistance.
The friend arrived at the site shortly thereafter, bringing two additional individuals. While they were working on the vehicle, unknown assailants began firing at them.
In a frantic attempt to escape the shooting, the driver accelerated but lost control, resulting in the vehicle crashing into a concrete jersey barrier on the roadside.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and found the driver with severe injuries, who was declared deceased at the scene.
Among the occupants, the driver suffered fatal injuries and died, one passenger was shot and transported to the hospital for immediate care, while the third individual successfully avoided injury and escaped the situation.
The reasons for this targeted attack are currently unclear. Highway patrols and detectives are actively searching the vicinity for clues and evidence.
As of now, no suspects have been apprehended. Police have issued a request for anyone who witnessed the shooting or possesses relevant dashcam footage from the R21 near the airport on Monday night to reach out.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities aim to clarify the details surrounding the event and identify those responsible.
