In tribute to her deceased mother, South African vocalist Lira, known by her birth name Lerato Molapo, chose to celebrate her mother’s memory through fashion at her birthday gathering on Saturday, March 14.
On March 18, the Feel Good artist posted delightful images and videos from her birthday celebration on Instagram.
To mark both her own birthday and her mother’s, which fell on March 7, Lira wore a chic pink dress that belonged to her mother.
LIRA HONOURS MOTHER IN A FASHIONABLE WAY
March is particularly significant for Lira as it commemorates both her birthday and that of her late mother.
The highly celebrated musician, who is currently recovering from a stroke, marked her special day at her beloved jazz spot, Hugh’s Jazz Club located in Braamfontein.
Several prominent celebrities were present at this memorable event, including Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Hulisani Ravele, Judith Sephuma, and Terry Pheto, among many others.
In a heartfelt and extensive post on Instagram, Lira reminisced about her birthday, expressing how the dress she wore, one of many “inherited” from her mother, made her feel a profound connection to her once again.
LIRA’S MOTHER PASSED AWAY IN 2024
In November 2024, Lira faced the heart-wrenching loss of her mother, Buyi Radebe Lichaba, after she bravely battled cancer.
At a Women’s Day celebration in 2023, the musician from Daveyton spoke candidly about her mother’s harrowing struggle with cancer for the first time, mentioning that she had to pause her own speech therapy to attend to her mother’s needs.
“Eight months after I had a stroke, my mom was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer,” Lira began.
“This is a woman who is a health fanatic, spends hours at the gym, takes care of herself, and eats well. The cancer was a shock to us,” she continued.
“The cancer took away her livelihood. She spent three months in the hospital; she was so sick,” she concluded.
