Former “Sushi King” and now politician, Kenny Kunene, has denied any ties to the controversial businessman Katiso Molefe, who was arrested this week as the alleged brain behind the murder of well-known musician DJ Sumbody.
During a televised interview, Kunene insisted on his innocence, but viewers couldn’t help but notice the two luxurious watches he wore, which together are valued at over R1.25 million.
Kunene: Wrong Place, Wrong Time
In the interview, the deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance reiterated that he has no connection to Molefe, who was arrested at his lavish Sandton mansion.
Kunene stated he was merely accompanying a journalist from his media company, African News Global, for an exclusive interview.
“I have done nothing wrong. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time – for the right reasons,” he asserted.
“I don’t know Mr. Molefe. I don’t have his cell number. The police confirmed that,” he added.
According to Kunene, the meeting was arranged through mutual acquaintances, and his presence was necessary for the journalist to gain access.
“As we approached the house, the police forcibly entered through the gate,” he stated.
All Eyes on His Wrist
While Kunene sought to distance himself from the high-profile murder case, social media was abuzz with comments regarding his striking wristwear:
- U-Boat Darkmoon (Neon Green) – Estimated value: R22,000 (shipping included)
- Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph – Estimated retail price: R1.25 million (shipping included)

Social media users quickly highlighted the disparity between Kunene’s claims of innocence and his ostentatious display of wealth.
“Only Kenny Kunene would wear a R1 million AP while claiming to be just a chaperone for a journalist,” joked one user.
Background on the DJ Sumbody Case
DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, was tragically shot and killed in 2022 in what the police suspect was a targeted hit.
Molefe, now detained, is believed to be the one who ordered the murder, although further details remain undisclosed.
Kunene’s unexpected appearance at Molefe’s home at the time of the arrest has raised questions, though he has not been charged with any crime.
What’s Next?
As police investigations continue, the full scope of the Molefe case and any potential political implications are yet to be determined.
Currently, Kunene is not in custody and claims he is “fully cooperating” with investigators.
Whether he truly was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, or if there are deeper layers to the situation, remains a pressing question – much like the luxury watches adorning his wrists.
