Cyan Boujee and Seemah Under Scrutiny for Endorsing Controversial Russian Initiative

Government investigates Cyan Boujee’s Russian promo

Social media influencers Cyan Boujee and Seemah find themselves in hot water for endorsing what was promoted as a chance for young South African women to pursue educational and work opportunities in Russia.

The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster has confirmed that the pair, along with other influencers, are being investigated for their roles in the promotion.

Cyan Boujee drew controversy after a video surfaced of her urging women to sign up for the Alabuga Start Programme, which quickly spread online.

In the recording, she suggested that the initiative would allow young women to “enhance their skills and better themselves.”

However, a number of South Africans quickly expressed concerns, alleging that the advertised opportunity resembled a trafficking operation.

In light of the public outcry, officials took action.

On Sunday, 24 August 2025, the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster issued a statement on X: “The video clip shared by a social media influencer, claiming to promote a 2-year-long ‘START PROGRAM’ intended for young women to gain professional skills and launch their careers, is currently under investigation. It is important to note that the influencer has since taken down the promotional video from her social media accounts.”

The cluster also emphasized the need for South Africans to be cautious when considering overseas job or study opportunities.

“[VERIFY] Avoid relying solely on social media advertisements. Always double-check and seek advice from a trusted source. Verify employment opportunities through official means: reach out to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), or contact South African embassies in the country where these opportunities are based,” the statement recommended.
