DJ Benzo’s ‘Gciniwe’: A Heartfelt Tribute to His Mother’s Legacy Through Afro Soul

admin August 8, 2026 3 minutes read
Beyond Rhythm: A Soulful Homage to a Mother's Love

Renowned South African DJ and producer Benzo is taking a step back from the energetic nightlife scene to open up about a deeply personal chapter in his life.

His debut four-track EP, Gciniwe, scheduled for release on 7 August 2026, coincides with Women’s Month and serves as a heartfelt tribute to his late mother.

Gciniwe transcends a typical electronic music compilation; it is a profound journey through themes of loss, gratitude, and healing.

Combining afro-soul, afro-pop, and modern African influences, the project acts as a musical tribute to the sacrifices and steadfast support that marked Benzo’s path from the Eastern Cape to prominence.

The artwork for the EP encapsulates this emotion, featuring moving phrases, “Dedicated to my mother” and “Thank you for the love that raised me.”

Known as Banele Sotomela, Benzo hails from Butterworth in the Eastern Cape and has gained a passionate following as one of South Africa’s most dynamic performers, captivating audiences across the country as well as in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.

Recognized for his eclectic style and remarkable talent for engaging with audiences, this initiative represents a conscious turn toward narrative and introspection.

“This EP is my way of saying thank you to the woman who gave me everything before I had anything,” Benzo explains.

“Every song carries a piece of my heart and a piece of her love. I’ve spent years helping people create memories through music. This time, I wanted to create something that preserves one of my own.”

The four tracks are a blend of poignant emotion and uplifting melodies: Gciniwe (Intro): A soft, atmospheric start that establishes the reflective atmosphere of the EP; Ngizwile: A solo display showcasing Benzo’s evolving talent as a nuanced producer; Mthandazo (with Megamind Nova): Translated as “Prayer,” this song brings forth the profound spiritual themes that accompanied Benzo during his grieving process; and Ufunani (ft. Blaq Seed, Mailo Music x Salaminah): The notable collaborative track leading the EP’s radio and digital promotional efforts.

For Benzo, the measure of Gciniwe’s success will not be based on chart rankings or club play but rather on its ability to connect with people.

“This isn’t about chasing trends or making another hit. It’s about leaving something meaningful behind,” he states.

“If even one person listens to these songs and thinks about calling their mother, forgiving someone they love, or appreciating the people who raised them, then I’ve achieved what I wanted.”

Gciniwe will be available on all major digital streaming services starting Friday, 7 August 2026.
