DJ Maphorisa expressed his admiration for Grammy-winning producer Black Coffee, acknowledging him as a pivotal figure in defining South African music and, consequently, influencing Maphorisa’s own career path. This acknowledgment arose during a recent conversation on Apple Music’s Beats in Space, where Maphorisa openly discussed the respect he feels the local industry owes to Black Coffee. He described him as a “godfather” of the music scene:
“Without Black Coffee, we wouldn’t be here; we would be thinking differently.”
Black Coffee’s journey and international success
Black Coffee’s career began in the 1990s, gaining wider recognition after his involvement with the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003. He embarked on his solo music career in 2005 by releasing his debut album through Soulistic Music, which featured a popular remix of Hugh Masekela’s ‘Stimela.’ His international acclaim peaked with his 2021 album ‘Subconsciously’, which won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2022, solidifying his status in the electronic music landscape.
For Maphorisa, Black Coffee’s journey was apparent long before the accolades followed. He told Slikouronlife:
“With me, I saw it back then, like around 2009-2010 and looking at now at what he has achieved, it’s crazy, it’s inspiring.”
The cycle of creative influence in South African music
Maphorisa emphasized that Black Coffee’s impact continues unabated. He credited him with developing a sonic identity that provided South African artists with a clear path. He remarked:
“He’s always been a step ahead because he’s been our leader, and he has set a lot of trends in S.A. Even back then, he was the guy; he was doing bootleg remixes, he was giving us the sound, he would give us direction.”
Maphorisa’s career trajectory mirrors this pattern. Beginning with production work at Kalawa Jazmee, he went on to establish BlaqBoy Music and advocate for amapiano, becoming a vital figure in fostering new talent. One such artist, Young Stunna, has acknowledged the mentorship and opportunities Maphorisa extended during his development.
