DJ Tira Shares Thoughts on Big Nuz's Impact in Durban's Spotlight

DJ Tira claims credit for Big Nuz Durban legacy

The iconic South African music ensemble Big Nuz has been celebrated across social media for their significant contribution to transforming Durban into a cultural center through their music and visuals during their peak period.

Images of the group were recently posted on X, along with the assertion: “The only people who made everyone wish to visit Durban through nothing but music videos … the marketing of Durban was unmatched.”

The post caught considerable attention, with numerous users acknowledging that Big Nuz’s music videos played a pivotal role in shaping Durban’s party culture and vibrant lifestyle.

Many fans reflected on a time when the group’s work was a dominant force on radio and television. One user remarked, “I don’t think we appreciate this era enough. Durban used to be a place for lots of fun and entertainment.”

Big Nuz, composed of the late Mampintsha,RMashesha, andDanger, gained prominence in the mid-2000s and became trailblazers of Durban’s mainstream music scene.

Their vibrant music videos, frequently filmed in the city, showcased the local beach, nightlife, and township culture, establishing Durban as an appealing destination for many young people across South Africa.

Nevertheless, the nostalgic discourse was ignited when DJ Tira responded with a curious remark: “And who brought them to Durban????”

The Afrotainment head elaborated on his involvement in the group’s growth, implying that Big Nuz’s successful trajectory shifted after their move from Johannesburg.

“They were hustling in JHB trying some kwaito/hip hop sound. When they touched down in Durban… Durban was never the same,” he stated.

While several users felt DJ Tira was unwarrantedly inserting himself into a dialogue focused on Big Nuz’s artistry, others defended him, recognizing his contributions to the group’s achievements.

“One and only, Makoya Bearings!!! I remember meeting amajita ‘Big Nuz’ hustling in JHB. Big up to you Tira, you did great work with these boys. My wish is to see their legacy live forever,” commented one supporter.

Conversely, some users critiqued Tira’s interjection, stressing that the initial post celebrated the group’s talent rather than his behind-the-scenes influence.

“He’s talking about their talent, not behind the scenes. Don’t include yourself in everything, Makoya,” one detractor argued.

And who brought them to Durban ???? 🤔
