EFF Calls for Swift Impeachment of Ramaphosa After Constitutional Court Ruling on Phala Phala Incident

EFF Demands Rapid Impeachment of Ramaphosa Following Court Ruling on Phala Phala Scandal

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have urged National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to promptly initiate impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa, following a significant ruling from the Constitutional Court earlier today.

In an official letter, EFF chief whip Nothando Nolutshungu called on Parliament to “immediately initiate the process” to enact the judgment, which declared Parliament’s 2022 choice to dismiss an independent panel report on the Phala Phala issue as invalid.

EFF Calls for Swift Impeachment of Ramaphosa After Constitutional Court Ruling on Phala Phala Incident

The independent panel, led by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, uncovered initial evidence indicating that Ramaphosa may have breached the Constitution in connection with the 2020 theft of approximately $580,000 from his Limpopo farm.

Chief Justice Mandisa Maya highlighted the necessity for the National Assembly to hold the President accountable as mandated by Section 89. EFF leader Julius Malema described the ruling as a “victory for accountability,” while the Democratic Alliance (DA) expressed its intention to engage constructively in any committee deliberations.

This ruling from the Constitutional Court brings the issue back into public focus, but the path to impeachment is complex, requiring a two-thirds majority in the Assembly. To date, Parliament has not provided a formal response or established a timeline for action.
