A deadly confrontation in Limpopo took place on Tuesday as an off-duty police sergeant from Gauteng and another individual lost their lives during a violent clash over an unlicensed mining site in Ga Mahlokwane village, located near Burgersfort in the Sekhukhune District.
The victims, 40-year-old Sergeant Patrick Mvula Nzapheza, affiliated with the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, and Evans Sadike, were killed amid tensions regarding control of the illegal mining operation.
Reports indicate that the two men had staked a claim to a 60% share of the operation and arrived armed with what they claimed to be a court order demanding cessation of the unlawful activities.
Their first visit to the mining site occurred on Friday, 17 July, when they instructed security personnel to inform the owner to come. After the owner failed to show up, they returned on Tuesday, 21 July, and reiterated their demands to the guards.
Tensions escalated when several vehicles filled with local community members appeared at the location.
The ensuing confrontation resulted in a physical struggle during which one individual was fatally shot. Another person was injured in the chaos, managed to escape, but later succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at Mecklenburg Hospital.
Local police in Driekop have initiated two murder investigations and are actively pursuing suspects connected to the incident.
Major General Jan Scheepers, Acting Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, expressed his dismay at the event, acknowledging the profound sadness within the police service over the death of one of its officers.
“All available resources are being mobilised to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” Scheepers stated.
This incident underscores the escalating violence linked to illegal mining activities within Limpopo, where disputes over control, land, and access to valuable resources have increasingly ignited deadly confrontations.
Authorities clarified that the conflict involved illicit mining operations rather than a legally sanctioned mine, as they continue to investigate the events leading up to the shooting.
