A 31-year-old man has received a 20-year prison sentence for the murder of his 20-year-old girlfriend on a farm close to Swartruggens in the North West province.
This verdict concludes a case that unfolded after the young woman was discovered lifeless in the defendant’s room, exhibiting numerous bruises and a swollen face.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the pair had been to a tavern before returning to the farm.
Warrant Officer Ofentse Mokgadi, spokesperson for the Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 SAPS, indicated that the man had attacked the woman after their return.
“She was later found unresponsive in his room with multiple bruises and a swollen face. She was declared dead at the scene,” said Mokgadi.
Following the incident, the accused was taken into custody and faced charges for the murder.
He is now sentenced to 20 years in direct imprisonment, and the court has also ruled him unfit to hold a firearm.

Senior police officials have expressed their approval of the conviction, commending the investigation and prosecution efforts.
Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae praised the police officers and prosecutor involved for their diligence and teamwork.
“Their dedication demonstrates the importance of thorough investigations and effective prosecution in ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence,” said Ntoagae.
Ntoagae indicated that the sentence serves as an important warning to those who perpetrate violence against women.
“This sentence sends a clear message that perpetrators will be held accountable,” he noted.
