Cedric Kaze provided a candid evaluation following Kaizer Chiefs’ surprising 2-0 loss to Siwelele FC at the Toyota Stadium on Wednesday night.
This defeat ended their impressive seven-match unbeaten streak, which had bolstered their hopes for a top three finish.
Siwelele took control early in the match, with goals from former Amakhosi player Tebogo Potsane and Sphesihle Jeza in the first half securing their victory.
In his post-match comments, Kaze was straightforward about the performance.
“We were not there in the first half. Everything was wrong — build-up, attack, defence. When you’re not there, you get punished,” he stated.
Derby Hangover Takes Its Toll
The loss came shortly after a taxing Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, and Kaze suggested that the intensity of that match may have drained his players more than anticipated.
“We went into the game very late. That’s something we must improve — consistency in mindset and behaviour,” he noted.
After halftime, Chiefs appeared more energetic but could not capitalize on their opportunities, a point of irritation for Kaze.
Selection Decisions Under Scrutiny?
The Burundian coach also pondered whether he should have rotated his lineup more effectively, as he had made only three adjustments to the squad that played in the derby.
“After the game, you ask yourself if you needed fresh legs and fresh minds. That’s the coach’s responsibility,” he reflected.
Upcoming Challenge: Sundowns
With just four matches remaining in the Betway Premiership, Chiefs need to bounce back swiftly, facing a daunting challenge ahead.
A crucial match against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns is on the horizon, set for Wednesday, 6 May at Loftus Stadium.
